Lionel Messi has joined forces with cryptocurrency exchange Bitget.
According to Bitget, a Singapore-based company, the agreement will give supporters of the Paris Saint-Germain forward the chance to learn more about Web 3.0 and the potential of cryptocurrency trading.
Although no additional information was provided, the partnership also includes a “shared understanding” that enables both parties to dedicate to more “impactful efforts” outside of cryptocurrency and soccer.
The agreement was signed prior to Messi’s fifth appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.
The 35-year-old, who came in fifth on SportsPro’s most recent list of the 50 Most Marketable (50MM) Athletes, also secures his second sponsorship in the blockchain industry after being named a global brand ambassador of Socios in March.
That deal is reportedly worth US$20 million over three years.
For Bitget, the pact adds to partnerships with the likes of Italian soccer giants Juventus and esports’ Team Spirit.
“We try to reflect the diversity and richness of our platform community in the partnerships we choose,” said Gracy Chen, managing director of Bitget.
“We open up Web 3.0 to sports fans; they open the field to crypto traders. As the football World Cup approaches, Messi is to lead Argentina to new glory. We are honoured to have such a force of nature collaborate with us.”
Messi added: “I wanted to thank Bitget for their enthusiasm in making me participate in the world of crypto. I trust that both parties can activate meaningful initiatives as well as in offering Web 3.0 to the sports fans.”
